ADSL stands for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Loop, but it means very fast internet access. Without getting too technical, it runs between 10 and 30 times faster than a traditional dial-up modem. It also is “always on” meaning that there is no need to dial up to connect to the internet - it’s always there.

ADSL is best connected to your network via a router, which will also act as a firewall, preventing some of the nastier aspects of the internet from your computers. It can also be directly connected to a computer, but routers are cheap for the security and ease they provide.
