A router is a device that serves to move data between different networks.

Routers have developed rapidly and now perform many advanced features at a fraction of the original price.

Some points to consider when selecting the right router for your needs are:

• VPN (Virtual Private Network). This is essential if you wish to connect two sites together via the internet, or if you wish to be able to connect to your main office network remotely via the internet. VPN is also essential if you wish to use Voice over IP between two sites.
• ADSL Modem/login client. If you are connecting to the internet via ADSL, it helps if your router has the ability to manage this service.
• Security. What level of security do you require from your router/firewall? All routers offer basic firewall, but some offer more advanced features, such as “Stateful Packet Inspection”, which may be required for more advanced firewalling.
• Fail-Over. Will your ADSL connection be essential to the running of your business? If something should happen to it for hours, or days, will your business grind to a halt with no email or web access? Do you need a backup service, such as a dial-up modem and can your router automatically use this when required?
• Switch. In smaller networks, a switch is often bundled inside the router. A switch allows multiple computers to interconnect to form a network. The switch handles the traffic on your internal network (LAN).
• Wireless. Some routers offer wireless built in. This can be immeasurably useful, as well as economical. Have you considered the benefits of wireless LAN?
