Voice over IP

Voice over IP, or VoIP has become one of the fastest used buzzwords in telecommunications over the last few years. Everyone thinks they need it, although few actually know what it is and how it works. NEC refer to VoIP as ToIP, or Telephony over Internet Protocol.

VoIP can be used, in conjunction with Least Cost Routing to send your calls over your data network, rather than your traditional voice lines. This can offer major cost benefits, especially in situations where your company has multiple sites with an existing data network in place between them.

VoIP relies on your data network having connections to the internet, such as ADSL, ISDN or other high speed products. Special hardware inside the phone system converts your voice into data packets, which are then sent over your data network, possibly via the internet. The hardware at the other end then interprets these data packets and turns them back into voice.

VoIP allows flexibility previously unavailable to tele-workers or small branch offices, offering the flexibility of digital connection and integration to the main telephone system from anywhere that has a suitable internet connection.
